A Trial through George Town
Walk Description
A Trial through Georgetown is a walking journey through one of Chennai’s oldest quarters, where history isn’t only in the buildings; it's in the laws, legends, and landmark judgments that shaped the city. As we trail along NSC Bose Road, we also place Madras’s legal past on trial– exploring how justice was imagined, enforced, and contested. From pre-colonial customs to the birth of a structured court system, the walk leads us to the rise of the Madras High Court, one of the oldest in the country. Along the way, we revisit forgotten trials, early legal minds, and dramatic cases that were once the talk of the town but are now lost to time. But beyond the obvious, this walk aims to uncover layers of legal history you won’t find in textbooks—cases that shaped the judicial system in colonial Madras, only to fade quietly into the footnotes. You’ll encounter stories of early barristers, the transition from Company-run courts to Crown-administered justice, and Courtroom dramas that sparked reform. Every corner on this road holds a legal memory, so join us on a walk to experience George Town through a legal lens.
