Merchants, Mansions, and Memories: A Walk down Coral Merchant Street
Developed as part of the Heritage Walk Leader Programme

The bustling Coral Merchant Street, now lined with logistics enterprises and warehouses, was once the vibrant hub of the Madras Jews. Coral Merchant Street’s legacy lives on, even after prosperous merchant communities have gone on, thanks to oral histories and the magnificence of its architecture.

Join us as we explore the tales of two remarkable communities, whose imprints still echo through the vestiges of Coral Merchant Street.

The walk was developed under the Heritage Walk Leader Programme.

The walk will be led by Ms Abirami D M. Driven by a deep passion for heritage & culture and with a background in arts management, Abirami collaborated with Madras Inherited on the 'Madrasiin Kalaignargal' project, highlighting the stories of 15 artisans in Chennai. Additionally, she worked with Madras Updates on the documentary series ‘Roots and Routes’, which explores the cultures of migrant communities in Chennai. Born and raised in Madras, she is fascinated by uncovering and sharing meaningful stories. Following her first walk route in Chintadripet, this walk explores her roots in Coral Merchant Street, where her maternal heritage lies.
