Madrasin Pengal
Developed in Collaboration with The Equals Project

Women and their contributions have largely played a negligible role in historical narratives, their absence speaking louder than their presence. Their lives rarely see the volume of celebrations that men’s do or the widespread commemoration that one observes of male personalities. The city of Chennai a.k.a Madras has seen some remarkable women who were active and influential across fields of politics, education, health, science, arts, sports, and administration. These women were pioneers in their field; their unrelenting activism, fiery speeches, and decisions played a vital role in shaping society as we know it today.

We set out on a quest to understand the lives of women in Madras, and that journey has brought us to this heritage walk, which aims to recognise the contributions and accomplishments of these women while also initiating dialogue and discussions on concepts like bias and perception, class and caste privileges, and recognition and remembrance.

Join us on a heritage walk that unlocks the contributions of these women and celebrates their lives!
