Shaped by Water and Time: The Making of Nungambakkam
This walk is an invitation to understand Nungambakkam as a neighbourhood shaped through many layers of change. Over time, this area has moved from village land to colonial edge, from water-filled landscapes to planned streets and from open grounds to established institutions. While much of this transformation is no longer visible, its effects continue to structure how the neighbourhood functions today.
Rather than tracing a single timeline or focusing on individual landmarks, this walk looks at how land was used, reused and reimagined and how everyday life adapted alongside these shifts.
We will pay attention to tanks that disappeared but left their imprint, roads that followed older settlement patterns, and institutions that grew out of civic and community effort. In doing so, the walk asks how history survives not only in monuments, but in layouts, names and routines that we often take for granted.

What Participants Say
I appreciate the amount of research that went into curating this walk. I really liked how it started as a story, and as we walked along it brought us back to the information that was shared, helping us connect with it. The village road reference, in particular, illustrated that beautifully.
