Pattalam of Workers: A History of Capitalism and Labour
Madras was the site of India's first Labour Day celebrations, and the neighbourhoods of Perambur, Pulianthope, and Pattalam bear witness to some of the city's earliest labour uprisings. This heritage walk in Pattalam will explore the historical intersections of capitalism, industrial labour, and the emergence of working-class power. Through key landmarks, buildings, and public spaces, we will uncover stories of exploitation, resistance, solidarity, and social transformation that have been shaped by workers and their struggles.

The area is also home to the iconic Pattalam Clock Tower, one of only five remaining clock towers in the city, and showcases fascinating examples of Art Deco architecture.

Join us on this walk to gain a deeper understanding of working-class histories and their profound influence on the city's pioneering labour laws and movements.
